5 secrets of a good CV/resume

  1. Make it easy to read 
    If the reader can easily follow what has been written in your CV/resume, it makes your job closer to you and you are more likely to be the one called in for an interview.

  2. Make it concise
    Think like an advertising copywriter: be concise, but give enough data to create interest and a desire to meet you.

  3. Make it attractive 
    CV/resume writing is a form of marketing or advertising, when the product is you. Your CV/resume must sell you to a prospective employer, and compete against other applicants who are also trying to sell themselves. So the challenge in CV/resume writing is to be more appealing and attractive than the rest. 

  4. Make it job-orientated
    Your curriculum vitae must be adapted to what the reader is looking for. Concentrate on the readers' needs; what do they absolutely need to know and what can be left out. If you are applying in response to an advertised vacancy, then the advert itself has all the clues you need, use the requirements they describe as a checklist and show in your response how you meet their needs. When you send your CV/resume to someone who hasn't advertised, you should keep it to the minimum and focused entirely on how you can contribute specifically to the company’s business needs.

  5. Make it clear and truthful
    Be honest if you want to have an edge over most other CV/resumes and applicants. An honest solid applicant will always be preferred to a dishonest 'star'. There's little or no point distorting or falsifying yourself in order to get a job. If you falsify yourself in your CV/resume you'll be unlikely to provide the necessary proof of your claims at interview, and even if you manage to do this and to get the job, then you'll not be able to do the job enjoyably without stress. Emphasise your characteristics, your capabilities and achievements - this is all fine - but know where to draw the line. Positive emphasis and strong presentation is good; falsehoods are not.
